Kitsune

A race of magical foxes from the Feywild, the kitsune are shapeshifters with a penchant for mischief.

Masters of Two Forms

In their natural forms, kitsune are large foxes with two tails. They have amber eyes and a lite coat of auburn fur—more exotic colorations do exist, with some kitsune sporting white or gray fur and black or brown eyes.

In their humanoid forms, kitsune appear to look like elves, standing from just under 5 feet tall to just over 6 feet, weighing between 100 and 145 pounds, and bearing the same pointed ears. Due to their shapeshifting abilities, however, kitsune coloration is extremely varied, though most tend to stay within the human range of coloration.

Hidden in Plain Sight

Long having left their original homes in the Feywild, kitsune today have spread far and wide across the realm. Kitsune tend to have no society of their own, preferring instead to integrate themselves into the settlements and homes of other races.

Natural tricksters, many an foolhardy young kitsune has accidentally outed him or herself because of their love for practical jokes.

Kitsune tend to adopt the naming traditions of the people that they live among. Kitsune native to they Feywild often pick names related to nature and the world around them.

Kitsune Traits

Your kitsune character has the following traits.

Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity, Intelligence, and Charisma score increase by 1.
Age. Kitsune mature at about the same rate as humans but live much longer, some having been known to reach over 500 years of age.
Alignment. Kitsune can be of any alignment, but tend toward chaotic alignments due to their sly and deceptive nature.
Change Form. In addition to your natural, fox-like form, you can change into a humanoid form. As an action, you can transform between your natural and humanoid forms.
Darkvision. Thanks to your fey blood, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Fey Heritage. Your creature type is Fey.
Kitsune Magic. You know the minor illusion cantrip. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for it.
Natural Trickster. You gain proficiency with the Deception skill.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Sylvan.

Natural Form

While in your natural form, your kitsune character has the following traits.

Size. You stand about 2 feet high at the shoulder and weigh about 25 bounds. Your size is Small.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 40 feet.
Keen Smell. You have advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Humanoid Form

While in your humanoid form, your kitsune character has the following traits.

Size. You stand between 5 and 6 feet tall and have an elfin, slender build. Your size is Medium.
Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Change Appearance. Unlike your natural form, some aspects of your humanoid form are flexible. As an action, you can change one or more of the following: the sound of your voice, coloration, and hair length.
